Lead by example
The key component of gaining the respect of your students is by leadership. It the old cliche "Lead by example". Of course we discuss professionalism, but showing and setting it in play is the best way.
I have to agree with you carla we are the role models in their lives. Some students do not have any positive influences in their lives, for the most part we are it.
I tell myself everyday that I need to lead by example not only for myself and my children but for my students. How would it feel to me if my students came in everyday late or didn't come in at all....
I agree this is something I do every day and in my field is very important to keep this in mind I tell my students the importance of this role, I am a Chef Instructor.
Couldn't agree more. Leading by example helps students to trust in your knowledge and instruction.
I agree with you to build trust, rapport, and have students respect you has a lot to do with providing the role model aspect...I teach nursing school and following the criteria for the dress code is very important for the students to learn to adhere to. By setting this example in skills classroom and in clinicals helps the student see where it can be important to the profession of nursing. This also builds respect for the instructor and helps the student with the professional aspect of nursing and respect with co-workers.
i totally agree with leadership.us as instructors/teacher should be leading our students the rite way and showing them the rite thing by that i mean doing positive things arround them and making them feal good ..
Hi Natalie,
We must lead by example as well as practice what we preach!
Patricia
Leading by example does gain respect from the students. They know my experience in the field, they know my years of instruction and once they see my demonstration they understand what is expected of them.
Hi Michael,
Students look up to us as their role models. We must always act as professionals in every way possible.
Patricia
I feel that leading by example and being role models is one of the most important and powerful things we can do for our students.
