Pronounciation Mistakes
I am an intructor in the pharmacy field my students and myself sometimes have difficulties pronouncing different medical and drug terms we would look them up online in class but our computers do not have speaks so we can't hear how the word is pronounced, what can I do to help solve this problem?
Hi Dorothy,
1. Get with you medical terminology instructor if you have one at your institution
2. Have your institution purchase speakers
3. Have your insitution purchase a medical terminology CD
4. Have your institution purchase a medical dictionary so that you can see how to pronounce the words phonetically
5. Practice at home so that you are able to pronounce the words

Dorothy, I can feel your pain! Pronunciation is a huge part of the material for dictation in my court reporting classes, especially medical dictation. The students cannot learn to represent the words properly if they are not spoken well. This is a cause for much research, making lists of the phonetic sounds, and practicing the dictation prior to using these words in class. And getting speakers for your computers will be a big help!
Yes, I occassionally share this issue and it is not that I have never pronounced the word correctly it is just being older I don't seem to enunciate the same.
Hi Kathy,
I hear this from time to time from students in medical classes. You can purchase CDs and have the correct pronounciation of the words by chapter. This is a big help.

I am also a medical instructor and I usually make sure to tell the students up front that certain words are spoken differently based upon regional accents. The books used sometimes have audio versions that may be purchased and some book reps have the availability to get the instructors to on-line book companions - this can help. I also have students attempt to say words or read passages aloud. Having a guest speaker come in can also help, especially if they can speak of different accents. The most important is to create an environment that the student feels comfortable by trying and for the instructor to not come across as a know it all.
Hi Noreen,
This is real life. There are many doctors with varied accents. We must adjust to various pronounciation.

I teach in the medical field as well and I tell my students that I am not the greatest at pronouncing terms but if they can do it better or can help us please let me know and they usually do.
Hi Joann,
I like how you admit to something that is not your strong suit. Your students will respect you for that and will help you in every way that they can. Have a seasoned instructor help you with words you are unsure of or you can even purchase a CD to listen to pronounciations.
