Gender expectations for "angry" students?
In the section about "angry students" the author of the course states: "(the pronoun "him" is being used here because hostile and angry students will almost exclusively be male)"
What research backs up this assertion? I've been teaching in a trade-school environment in Chicago for many years and I have basically equal experience with angry students of both genders.
I agree that angry students can be both male and female. It is not so much their gender but the need for understanding and that comes into play. Adults in general tend to expect exceptions to be made for their particular issues and become angry when their needs are not met.
I also agree that angry students can be both male and female. i tesyimate that i have had an almost even amount of each. i feel it is important to treat angry students with respect while showing that you are trying to understand the issue. i have found thatseeking to understand the issue will go a long way towards helping the student understand your desire to help and can diffuse a bad situation.
