I do agree that there are more than one soft skills that are necessary yo be successful. One of the key things is to have the ability to listen patiently.
Listening is key to undersatnd any problem or issue it gives you time to understand and alos to think for a resolution.
I agree that getting a long with others is a very important soft skill. This is something that you have or you don't. I think this is hard if not impossible to teach an individual to do. We know that tension, bitterness, frustration, and hatred in the workplace make the workplace a negative environment. We tend to work better in environments where people get along, work well together, and want to cooperate and help each other.
I agree that soft skills are most important. We all work with people and people are the number one component that make any institution work. Almost anyone can be taught a skill, but soft skills are not as easily developed.
I personally think integrity, tact, and a sense of humor are the most important soft skills for any workplace. Someone who shows integrity will be trusted by their "team" and will undoubtedly show others respect. Someone who shows tact will be able to handle situation with empathy and kindness toward others. And a sense of humor is needed in any workplace to prevent people from getting angry or mean toward others.
Gary,
I love that, communicating and listening. Sometimes people forget communication is a two way street.

I believe that the most important soft skill is a positive attitude. I find that people whom enter into their workplace with a positive disposition are generally flexible and team-oriented. Maintaining a positive attitude is pertinent to having successful people skills and a healthy workplace behavior.
Staying positive in an educational setting also fosters a good learning environment where students feel comfortable to approach the instructor.
Being a good communicator, which includes being a good listener, and being polite and understanding of the student's circumsances.
Sometimes it is based on the dynamics of the class, some classes require more of one skill than the other.
Dena,
Keep up the good work. Your skills that you have learned will be an asset for the students in your class.

Michael,
One way to look at it is what skills do most people value as opposed to most important. Everyone's values are different as well as their interpretations of what is important.
Philip Campbell
Dependability, respect for others and accountability for actions are the most important, especially when part of team. I worked in healthcare for 10 years before I started teaching and I have brought those practices with me and try to instill them into my students.
I think that the most important soft skills are those that allow for a person to be an effective team player. I have found that it is talked about by those in charge but not often displayed. I feel there was a soft skill left out of the whole discussion and it is leadership by example, most of the bosses that I have had to this point in my life; told me how important being a team player was but...they were not alway following their advice. They did not lead by example...the best way to get people to follow what you are doing is to do it!
It's very to narrow this down to one. Actually, it is impossible; I believe it take more than one to pair with hard skills that will result in success. I believe communication, positive attitude, reliability and respect are soft skills needed for most success.
Communication is key to interaction with internal or external customers effectively. A positive attitude takes you a long way, even if you lack in a hard skill, a positive attitude can boost your equity as a valued contributor in any situation. Showing up is half the battle, thats why reliability is critical; if you cant be counted on, your hard or soft skills dont matter. Lastly, respect is manditory, you must give it to get and you must exhibit it, even if other lack it.
That's sort of a trick question. All soft skills are important. One might argue integrity is most important, but if I can't depend on you then what does integrity matter. Positive attitude might be the important, but if the person has no common sense then what good is it?
My answer is there is no one soft skill that is most important; they all should be viewed as equally important. Depending on the situation one skill may stand out as most important for that circumstance.
Chanel,
Keep doing what you are doing with your good attitude. Customer always want to see a good attitude.

I think that the most important soft skills are to be dependable and the be positive. At the end of the day, I am in customer service and I must maintain a good attitude no matter what is thrown my direction.
I agree. I have worked at the VA Hospital for 12 years. Listening and providing g a non-threatening environment allows for positive reenforcement and great communication and great success.

Colin,
Managing personal stress and dealing with negative emotions is something that everyone deals with. The hardest thing is to be the positive persona in the classroom. Stay positive and keep reading the room.

there are many situations that arise in the course of a day at school, that cause a response from a teacher, trying to manage the class, keep cool, and show a good example for the students in controlling emotions of frustration, and sometimes anger. uncooperative students that may be disruptive can elicit anger from other students , showing a good example how to handle situations in a calm, professional manner is an essential skill.
