Some times in teaching I have used a fellow student who has mastered a task and assigned them to a fellow student to do a task analysis and to give the student struggling with the task some feedback and create a non-judgemental atmosphere in which to experiment and make mistakes on the way to learning to master the task at hand. Deb,
yes, this is one of the primary reasons to utilize the peer teaching methodology & it really helps the students retain the information better as well.

One of the best strategies for peer teaching/learning was taught to me while I was in school-See one, do one, teach one. Each student will have a different "style", and if you have several students in class the concept can be reinforced several different ways.
I find that it can be a good fit... as the person with the strong understanding is put in a position to teach a concept... this helps them iron out any of the misunderstanding of the concept when they are taught. I learned this from Maria Montessori... I believe she was a pioneer in empowering students to help other students.
Cara,
and this is a great attitude on your part as you recognize that you don't have to be the only one "teaching."

I agree with this. i often have a student that has mastered a skill help another, it works out well. The student who is a bit behind dose not feel the pressure to be so perfect and is at times more willing to to try harder with a fellow student rather than with me.
Sharon,
this is a great strategy as it helps the student who has mastered as well as the struggling learner.
