Technology In The Classroom-How Much Is Too Much
As an instructor I want to stay up to date with the technological information I present to my students that will help them learn about the subject they are studying. However I don't want to fall into the routine of showing a video every class period. I like having contact with my students in the classroom that helps me see that they really get what I am teaching and are able to show me what they know. I love seeing their faces when they have masterd a skill or finally understand what I am teaching and how that information applies to real world experiences. What is the happpy medium and how do I achieve it?
there is a fine line. i try to mix up as many different types of media in the class so they don't get bored
Laura,
yes & we can mix up our lectures with activities & brief question/answer times as well.

In my classroom I have students that do not have a smart phone and do not stay connected with the technologies. I often present material in two or more ways to connect to all of them. you are lucky if all your students are Gen Y.
Don,
this is a good idea & practice to provide the information in as many forms as possible so the students can access it in the way possible for them.

I think videos are a cop out for instructors who aren't willing to invest the time to prepare for class. Not every video opportunity has to or should be taken, a live demo often makes a much more resounding impact on the retention of the material I believe, regardless of the generation student, a tangible experience is often better than a media or technology based one.
I too try to mix up media with my lectures and discussions with Power point, overhead presentation, while pausing during electronic presentation to discuss important points, provide real life examples and to ask questions of students.
I have the same issue in my class I put together a site the students can access after I send them a link to it. There they can find the Power point materials, things you need to know study guides, and optional quizzes they can take as well. In addition I also supply the material in paper format for the students who don't have internet access.
