For the most part our students look professional and clean. Some are wanting to stretch the boundaries of the requirements set for our program. What others see is not always the reflection our individual students see/smell, especially in the way of tatoo exposure, hair that is loose or falling down and sometimes body odor in a clinical setting. This segment is useful, and I can see how our own perceptions of what is 'professional' may sometimes cloud the students perspective.
I think this will be very helpful. Everyone's idea of what is professional is a little different. This will help everyone get on the same page. We have a strict uniform code and someone is always pushing the envelope... I think I will use this on the first day of class to help get everyone on the same page!! Thanks!

I agree. This ca be a tricky topic and this lesson really helps to make it easier.
I cant wait to use this with my students. They do not realize how different it is working in a medical environment. I have to remind them about hair and nails all the time. I think this will be a fun, non threatening way to reinforce this information.
I like this idea especially for the first day of class. I have thought about expanding it to dress the part of an unprofessional employee...such as wearing lots of jewlery, hair messy, wrinkled uniform, flip flops, too much makeup, no name tag, too much perfume and then asking the students to identify the things that are unprofessional. Asking questions such as do I look professional? Are you comfortable with me as an instructor looking this way? How do you think patients would respond to a caregiver that looked this way? Do you think it would be easy to find a job looking unprofessional? The list can go on and on.
Cynthia, I like the part that is "what's wrong with this picture?". Awareness is a skill every student needs.

We have done the "unprofessional look" for students. They just laugh and think we look dumb. But what is funny is that when they do it, it is OK for them. Great learning tool!
I will definitely use this on the first day of class when discussing uniform policy. I will definitely be purchasing a MIRROR or two. That is a GREAT idea!
Wendy, shop at a discount store and you can find inexpensive mirrors for your use.

Excited to use this as well, always a touchy subject, but inevitably needs to be addressed. I am going to suggest to our campus president about placing the sign above the mirror in bathroom also to remind students to look the part of a healthcare professional. A great idea!
Judy, creating awareness of good hygiene and professional image and attire can be tough. It is essential, though.
