Unfortunately we can't

...use food in our lab's its an osha violation. however this gives us an excuse to utilize another room!

I was thinking the same thing. Plus we do not have an oven so would be a waste of food (or I suppose someone could take it home). However this is a clever idea and maybe could work if you used toy food instead.

Lisa, toy food could act as a substitue and could be reused by many people over many semesters.

I thought that as well but I guess we could always use another classroom! I like the ideas of using plastic items for the food or perhaps you could make it out of paper products.

I think this a clever idea. Doesn't need to be food just anything that is a base (floor) and then build on it.

Shirley, I agree that this can be adapted to a number of different class situations with a bit of creative thought.

I have used food at various times to illustrate different concepts and have not found it to be a successful technique in my hand. The students have commented it is too simplistic and not up to the standards of a college learner.

That is a tough one to counter (even though many of our students are not themselves able to do college level work). Sometimes I show them my human anatomy coloring book, other times I mention the sheer amount of facts they have to learn and point out that using differernt learning techniques can make a memorizing chore easier.

Abigail, I also point out that the way a person learns does not change through a lifetime. The easiest way to retain information is to use all of the senses, no matter how young or old.
