Creating Lifelong Learners

What are some strategies you can use to encourage continued learning by your students?

I love the idea of email postcard for reinforcing a key concept that a student would like to be reminded of. Planning to use this!

Lisa, it is a no cost idea that can help students to commit to learning from each other.

One Idea I like is incorporating online continuing education courses in the classroom. Todays day and age has many continuing education course resources online, and many of these are actually free. By introducing them in class the students not only get to learn things that pertain to what they are currently learning but it gives them an introduction to the resources that will be there when they are done with school as well.

Gordon, teaching students to find and use resources when in the professional world is a skill we all need to teach.

I encourage my students to watch videos, discuss topics with other students and practitioners in the field, and to read additional materials related to the subject matter taught in class. I often remind them that the health care field is continuing to evolve and they will never know all they can know, so they should take advantage of all opportunities to learn.

I think it is important as a teacher to be a student as well, your studies may be for a higher degree or a different endeavor. It lets the students know you value education and that you know what it like to be the student.

Roberta , and that attitude can help us understand why students act the way they do.

i assign students certain topics regarding subject matter and I let them be a "teacher for the moment".

Ma. Louella , if someone has to teach a topic, they must master it first. Great strategy!

Creating a fourm online for instructor and student interaction. Create online discussion groups with pertinent topics and areas of study.

I encourage my students to attend continuing education workshops ,attend seminars and always keep abreast of what is going on in the ever-changing field of healthcare.

Radha, this makes them aware of the personal responsibility needed to be a professional in the healthcare field.

I encourage my student s to form study groups, I will give them an assignment to work on.

Elizabeth, sometimes this sort of teacher directed grouping leads to friendships and collaborative learning throughout their career studies.

"Motivation" I use life long experiences to help my student understand how you need to be passionate about what you are learning, and about to go out in the"real world" to be able to use with things that were taught at school.

Then I also became a part of the extern pilot program in that I actually go out to see the student doing what they were taught in the class room while completing their practimum. If they do well and get the opportunity to get hired, I will have the opportunity to back each semester and see how they have grown. (That is as long as we have the contract with that particular site).

Also every student that is in my review class, right before graduation recieve a gift at the end of the classas long as they pass. I continue to recieve saluation from my student long after graduation; either via another student or through the email address at school.

It is truly a wonderful feeling.

Tina, you are so lucky to see the whole circle of learning. You can see the real impact that your efforts have had on your learners. Keep up the terrific work you are doing!

We have a discussion thread used for our students on externship to share their experiences with the current students and faculty. Student comments have allowed for good discussion and insight for students still in classroom training. Having students in the field sharing their experiences reenforces what is being taught in lecture and lab.

Julie, this is a great format for people sharing stories asynchronously. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I like to teach my students how to learn about each topic on their own. When I teach English, I connect my computer to the visual screen and let students watch me typing in questions related to grammar and how to write APA papers on Purdue Owl, a free online writing center. The students watch me as I find answers to questions and learn how to do research on Purdue Owl. I remind them that they can use this free resource whenever they want.

For the Jabbers, I pull up medical articles and read and discuss them as a class. We look up unfamiliar words on Google and I show them how to understand complex medical literature. After teaching them how to understand these journals, they can go back and read these journals on their own later.
