Digital Citizenship and Technology Tools

This unit, on technology tools, brings to my mind the term Digital Citizenship!

According to Terri Heick (Director of TeachThought) the definition of digital citizenship is “the self-monitored habits that sustain and improve the digital communities you enjoy or depend on."

The characteristics of students in this digital age (digital citizens) are numerous. Some of those that I find to be of applicable to this unit on technology tools are:
1. Include all who wish to join. A wiki would allow this to occur.
2. Disseminate useful information. A digital portfolio would enable this to occur.
3. Create. A student could create through a blog, wiki, videocast, or podcast... just to name a few.

It is amazing to me to think that just over a decade ago I would not of considered such a term as Digital Citizenship!

Terry,

I love your discussion of digital citizenship. We do have to think in those terms and get students to think also. This does mean more than just knowing the technology. Great post.

Digital Citizenship is an interesting term and invites participation.

It implies that there are responsibilities if one is to get involved in the online learning environment. Too often, participants in the digital/social media world are anonymous or engage passively.

As an educator, I will challenge myself to encourage layered activity that will engage and develop thought, ideas and learning by involving all participants.

Margaret,

You make a great point. We want education to be student centered-student responsible and yet the online environment can allow students to be passive. It is up to us as educators to educate about that digital citizenship. It also is a developing soft skill that we need require our students to practice.

What is a digital citizen? What is the relationship between digital citizenship and say citizenship of a particular country? Is digital citizenship the precursor to the destruction of political citizenship? I would greatly appreciate another person's opinion here.

Donald,

My thoughts are the digital part of digital citizen is the environment of operation. What does my "digital" reputation? Do I respect other digital citizens? The digital citizen can include personal, professional, and educational persona.
