LMS Technology

Which learning management system do you consider most popular and valuable? I understand that some schools have customized systems but Blackboard appears to be the industry gold standard. Do you agree? Why or why not.

Austin,

This is just my opinion; but Blackboard does seem to be used more but is losing market share to other products such as Desire 2 Learn and Canvas. It is interesting but a couple of the publishers are now in the "game" such as eCollege is a product of Pearson. It is best to be consistent within the university or program. I do know when students are asked to learn a variety of different technology that does the same thing it becomes frustrating.

I have used just about every LMS, and I would have to say that Blackboard is not among the most easily navigable platforms I have used and I believe students agree. I have found that Moodle's linear structure (while occasionally limiting for the instructor) provides security and clarity for the student that has a discernible impact of student performance.

I would also say that several of the big players have their own, proprietary LMS platforms. I have seen a few and found ALL to be more intuitive that Blackboard.

Kevin,

True, I am an exclusive Blackboard user and will say that. The issue is many of us don't have options to change and I don't really believe in using a different one than the university uses just for ease. I have had so many students so confused because an instructor didn't use the tools that the university provided. They had no technical support and the instructor had very shallow knowledge of the product. It is not always easy but consistency connects learners with the LMS>
