
Critical to establishing a pattern of teaching is accessibility. Facilitators need to be available to their students regularly in order for students feel as though they have guidance if they need it.
Second, facilitators need to reach out to students who appear to be struggling with the course. Being proactive with student who don't get the pattern immediately need additional guidance until they develop their own process.

I have taken many online courses in my graduate program and if I was not a motivate student, I would not have done so well. Many instructors would make 'canned' weekly announcements and feedback on assignment were not individualized. I felt as if there were just collecting a paycheck and not interested in their students.

You make such an important point. I have several students that feel they are so alone in some online courses because there is NO accessibility to anyone; instructor or student.
