Creating an online course

I think that the three things that i am most concerned about when developing an online course for students is 1) their ability to understand what is required of them, 2) making sure that the course material is easily found and easily recognized and 3) that i have as much opportunity as possible to "interact" with them through a variety of media.

Matthew,

Thanks for your input. Communicating effectively with students so that they understand the course requirements, helping them interact and establishing a well-designed online course are all essential.

Nice job.

I agree with you, Matthew. Even as a teacher, when I enter a new online class I will be teaching (one that has already been designed), the first thing I do is look to the course requirements. Whether we are teachers or students, we need to understand the expectations so that we know where to focus our energy.

I also think that it's important to use a variety of media to interact with students. There are so many great ways we can do this now. I used to rely mostly on written announcements and discussions posts, but now I make short videos so that students can hear/see my announcements, and this reaches so many more students. Not only do students seem to absorb the material better, but they also seem to connect with me more. It's nice for them to know that I'm more than just a name--I'm a real person with a voice, and I can use that voice to help them succeed!

Jennifer,

Thanks for following up on Matthew's forum postong. Starting with the course requirements, making sure all students understand the expectations and making sure you assess those requirements/outcomes is essential.

Using a variety of ways to communicate content to students is also essential. Thank you again.
