Online resources

Online resources may include a discussion board, email, chat rooms, etc. What is the most important online resource you use?

For me the most import online resource is email, because it allows me to have a more personal one on one connection with the stdent in a non threatening environment.

Zara,

The most important online resource typically depends on the the course content, level of course (undergraduate or graduate), purpose of the lesson, learning outcome, etc. I always hate the answer "It depends," but it does. ;-)

Christopher,

Just be careful with email overload. That's why I use the FAQ discussion board, to help alleviate the email overload in my inbox.

Thanks for you input.

The most important online resource that I use is a chat room. This takes the form of a Live Chat, a requirement in the program and courses that I teach. The Live Chat provides an opportunity to communicate learning concepts, review prior concepts and lessons that were associated with them, provide examples related to concepts and directly related to assignment requirements, and chat allows students to interact with one another and with me in a shared learning. Nelson,

Glad the chat room works well for you. This helps the students get engaged and feel like they are a part of a class and not alone online. Thanks for your input.

Zara, I find email to be the most important online resource. It is vital to our students success. Email allows you direct and intimate dialogue with the student regarding course material and any difficulties they may be experiencing. Students tend to be more open and honest when the dialogue is one on one as opposed to, lets say a discussion board.
Nadia

Nadia,

Email can be a great thing and also a "curse." ;-) Make sure you don't let it take over all of your time and you let student know when you will be checking and not checking email. It does provide a forum for students to express their concerns in a private setting. Nice job.

We create videos for each week of each course in our program. Depending on the course, the content for each video ranges from teaching a particular software program, demonstrating a skill, or reviewing material. The students take a quiz after watching the video (the quiz is provided to them beforehand) to ensure that they have watched the video. The students have access to every single video in the program until graduation. We have found this to be a great resource. Of course, since we are a Digital Media college, it's easier for us to create online videos =)

Christin,

Videos are a good way to engage students and help the visual learners comprehend the content. I know many students do go back and revisit the videos for remediation. Nice job.

The most important resources is whichever happens to maintain the highest quality of communication with your students, both for helping them understand the material as well being able to know what their concerns or questions might be. Also, online resources can be materials available to them in addition to resources other than the ones provided to them.

Rene,

Any resource that helps them is a good thing. You are right. Thanks for your input on this forum.
