How to properly reference a You Tube video.

I am curious what the rule is on linking to YouTube videos to enhance instruction, some say it is a copyright violation.

Nicholas,

I just re-read the Terms of Use on YouTube's website, and I recommend you do so as well. They state that as long as you don't modify the original work and you use their Embedded player (the "share" link and the Embed code to add it to your page) and are not using it for commercial use then it is fine. Therefore, using it in a class would be ok as long as you connect it to your course using their code. Some people use "capture" software to pull the videos off YouTube and use them that way...that would actually be a violation of their terms of use.

Yes. I use them frequently to illustrate key issues and current events. Youtube has strict policies with how you link or embed, but as long as you follow the guidelines it is fine.

Morissa,

They are not too hard to use properly. Just click the share link and use the code they provide and you are fine. They can be very beneficial, but of course like any resource you really have to review them to pick what is useful.

All,

I currently use You Tube videos in my online courses. The students enjoy the ability to play them over and over to learn the material. I recommend them highly. The embedding process is simple and that way you are not violating copyright infringement.

John,

I agree YouTube videos can be very helpful in the classroom but you just have to be very careful to proof them before using them. Anyone can post anything to YouTube and therefore you have to ensure that the information posted is valid and accurate.
