Live Labs

By using live lab in my class where the student can enter act with the instruct has been a great help in the communication process. In the live labs the students can ask question about the topics of the week or ask any questions that they might have about that weeks assignment.

Mary,

The "live labs" sounds great. Anything we can do to improve communication is a plus. Keep it up!

Live labs are excellent for the students. Unfortunately, many work during the day and the evenings are filled with family and personal obligations for many.
I believe that it would be helpful to have power point presentations for students to view so they are able to look at them when they are available rather than waiting until times when the live labs are open. R. Waters

Renee,

When you say live labs, you are talking about synchronous meetings, correct? You can have synchronous meetings with whoever can come and record those sessions so others can watch on their own time.

I feel that power points are excellent alternatives for a student who misses a lecture or needs more information but it does not equate to a i2s encounter. If the student sounds like they are too busy, I try to work out a time where they can give me just 2 minutes of their time and let us connect. It usually turns into 5 minutes once we connect and have a dialogue about the reading material or an assignment or course issues. The one i2s is an opportunity for the student to know there is a person on the other end who cares and is there if needed. It can be a positive and motivating factor if a student is challenged by time schedules, family issue, etc. and may want to give up and drop the class due to these things. We can be online and in touch.
