Rubrics are wonderful for various reasons. Not only does the rubric help the students to focus on what is needed in their written responses, it helps the instructor focus on how to help the students learn and develop. This helps the instructor focus on problem areas, and work with each student in those problem areas so that the student can communicate in a more efficient manner. Rubrics allow for consistency and equity in grading, which again, helps the instructor to have focus. This will also help the students remain on task. Finally, this helps the instructor manage time in the grading process so that tight deadlines are met in the class. Most institutions need grades to be posted within a certain time frame, and students are normally eager to know sooner than later how well they performed.
Meghana,
Good point. We do have to remember that rubrics are essential for students and instructors. Thanks for your input.
I have seen rubrics helps student to decide where to put efforts and it helps instructors in grading.
Richard,
I think one way to help students focus is to help them with their time management skills by providing a To Do/Due Date list. I also post learning outcomes within rubrics so they know what they are working toward. These are two ways I do it.
With all of the distractions that exist in the world today, being able to focus has become a desired skill. There is a constant competition between social media and education, especially in the online environment. It is our job to create a place that is exciting enough to be engaging yet informative enough to be worthwhile.
How do you do you make this happen in your courses?
Kimberly and Aundrea,
Thanks for continuing the conversation about rubrics. They help, as you stated, both the instructor and student. Nice job.
I agree with everything you stated Aundrea. Rubrics are a great tool. It closes the door to students questioning how they were assessed compared to their peers. Each student can review the rubric and understand where they had misses within the assignment. Rubrics create a clear picture for the student and the instructor.
Aundrea,
Focus is a good word to use when describing the interaction between students and rubrics. This is very beneficial. Thanks!
