Resources for Developing Rubrics

What are some online resources you may use to develop rubrics?

I have used several sources to genererate rubrics. I have a general rubric I adapted from teaching at UCF. There are several rubrics one can also use found online. This may create a basis to the specify what you would like to evaluate and modify the rubric to fit. Does anyone else have other ideas?

Tanya,

Any of the LMS (learning management systems) such as Blackboard now has rubric creation as part of their assignment. I haven't tried it but I will this summer. I hope I can incorporate it in my courses!

There are many examples of rubrics for different courses, majors, and assignments types available online. These can be used as a basis for the rubrics to be used in the course.

This link has many sample rubrics in one document:

There are also online tools that will assist in the automated creation of rubrics.

For example, http://rubistar.4teachers.org/

is a tool that facilitates the creation of rubrics online. There are many templates for different types of assignments available, and these can be customized for the specific assignment.

Laura,

So, do you create your own or us a generator. Blackboard will create its on rubric soon.

I have attended Turnitin webinars, as well as other training sessions. These get-to-gethers could be a helpful source in meeting other professors and exchanging ideas, including rubrics.

Other people in the field of study, or even outside, can help evaluate and suggest improvements.

I have never used resources online and this is useful information. Now I will have more resource should I need it. Presently, I use the pre-fab rubric entitled "Student Expectations" rubric allocated with my courses. I appreciate the title, student expectations. It is in excel formal and the criteria is broken down into scales from did not demonstrate to "Stellar" demonstration.

Christina,

That is true! More and more our learning management systems have rubric generators also.

Rebecca,

That sounds like a great tool. Nice that it is in an excel format.

The rubrics I used are created by the course developers. I review each rubric associated with the weekly task to make sure it makes sense and covers the task requirements.

Antoinette,

I am glad you review the rubrics to ensure they are on target for evalution of the assignments. Also, including the learning outcomes in the rubrics is helpful as well. It helps the students connect the assignments and course outcomes. Thanks!

Rubistar is a website that helps educators from K-12 by providing templates in various disciplines which helps to design a basic rubric from the beginning. It is inexpensive, which is also a big advantage.

Ed,

Love Rubistar and use it often. It is nice how you can tweak them to meet your needs. Thanks.

Unless it is a newly created course, I generally use a rubric from a current instructor (best-practices). This way I know the rubric is tested and appropriate.

I have never used an online rubric generator, but a quick searched revealed the following sources: rubistar and iRubric.

Often, I find that using a simple Google search helps in finding a rubric that is usable, and specific. When I do find one I adjust the dimensions of the rubric to include areas that are specific to the assignment, and end up adding things that are important to be on the rubric. I use the rubric I find as a base, and expand from there.

I find that when building my own,it is important to create a spreadsheet of the important elements of the paper. I also include any criteria the school find necessary, and add this to the rubric as well. I do see there are other ways such as Rubistar and Rcampus rubric gallery that can assist in creating rubrics.

Michelle,

It's OK to start with a generator or what someone else has used, but make sure you tweak it to meet your needs if need be. Take time to ensure it's in line what the learning outcomes and the project. Thanks!

David,

Isn't Google a good thing. ;-) There are many rubrics already developed. Just make sure you, as you stated, do include your specific criteria. I'm glad you shared that specific statement with us. Thanks for your input.

Rcampus rubric gallery has a comprehensive list of rubrics. It allows one to create rubrics or watch videos regarding creating a rubric.
