Cultural background and decision making
does a person cultural background has any effect in the decision making process?
Richard,
We are all influenced by our own experiences and background. What we perceive to be reality is shaped largely by our previous experiences. That is why it is so critical for leaders to ask many questions and solicit different points of view in order to ensure that the best possible decision is arrived at. The different viewpoints and experiences of others helps us develop a broader and deeper context of a situation and helps us make more informed decisions. This is probably most evident in diplomacy related to foreign policy. Looking at foreign policy solely through our own lens is often times frought with problems in that it often does not take into account the realities of the other country and the views of the people within it. Can you think of examples of this that you have seen in the workplace?
Dr. Blake Faulkner
Yes, absolutely. The key isn't to overcome or disengage from one's culture, but to make certain that all persons at the table (a) aren't making the decision from a personal standpoint and (b) that each individual feels that they have an equal part in the decision making process; that their viewpoints are being heard and understood.
Lisa,
Well said Lisa. Respecting others view points is essential.
Dr. Blake Faulkner
I have witnessed this in the workplace and if you are not cautious it could become a negative outcome. Knowing how to understand and be open to where the other person's view comes from will allow you to manage the conversation and use their view to your advantage in making appropriate decisions for the company.
