Placement versus Admissions

One of the problems we experience from time-to-time is our admissions representatives relying on Career Services to “close the deal” for them. An admissions agent will ask a prospect to call Career Services and inquire about job opportunities in his/her area. This puts the Career Services personnel in a precarious situation of making or breaking the deal. We have great reps and this happens rarely. When it does, the Career Services personnel kindly deflect the question back to the rep. Our policy is now “Career Services works with enrolled and graduated students only.”

In my opinion admissions representatives should work together with career services to a extend it is good to explained to a prospect student the jobs opportunity they will have upon completion of their program.

I agree with Tania, it should be a team effort. The career services department is really that, a service, it is not a guarantee. That is why we say they assist finding work for our graduates and are not a job placement service.

Tyler,
It takes a whole school to make a successful graduate.

Tania,
It is a great idea to get the student involved with Career Services from the beginning.

William,
Interesting post..

I agree, it takes an entire team sometimes to bring the student to you school. Its about training them, graduation and ultimately landing a job!

I always include a FIVE MINUTE stop by the career services office on a school tour with a prospective student. The purpose is to reinforce what i have already said about our stellar career services department and to put a "human face" on it.Career services is consistant in what they say to prospects and have a good understanding of their role in this situation. It is DEFINATELY NOT "to close the deal"

Michael,
And when the graduate is placed, we all share in their success.

Stephen,
Career Services has such an important role and it is great to introduce them right at the beginning.

If an university deliveries all program online what is the best way to create a Placement services?

Gloria,
By providing employment links, a phone number or online chat to speak to someone directly. Assiting with completion of resume or letters may be another avenue.

Actually I think job placement assistance and services is the responsibility of every staff member of the institution. From Admissions, Instructor/Professors, Student Services, Director etc. It's culmination of efforts that boost the student's confidence and also prepares them to be proactive in the search for the dream career they had in mind when they enrolled into your instituion.

Randy,
We all have a part to play. It should start from day 1.
