Non-Workable Lead

A lead that has a wrong/non working phone number, address, email address...or if the person or persons inform you the person you are trying to contact does not live at or have that phone number is understood to be non-workable...but at what point do you determine a lead to be non-workable when the person states they are no longer interested....many admissions directors feel you file it for now and recall in a month or so....sometimes I call a person only to hear " I have told you many times, Im not interested" and yet we file to call again...I feel this makes the school look bad...what are the procedures for this at some of the other schools...I would really like to know the correct definition of a non-workable lead in this sense

Alisaundra,
It is better to replace than continue to work a dead-end lead.

I believe we spend too much time on trying to bring someone in who has not shown for set appointments when we could move on and use that energy on people who want to get an education.

Robert,

I completely agree with your perspective. NVL (non-viable) leads are different than someone that says they are "not interested" or "not right now". I am sure we have all enrolled students that at one time said they were not interested or even hung up. I enrolled a student once that never answered because she was "scared" of pursuing her education. However, about two months after I initially received the lead, she called me to interview and enroll. If each of us had to pay for our own leads, I'm sure we would exhaust every reasonable effort to help our potential students make the best choice for their future. Taking ownership of your business is important no matter what your role.

In my own experience, I always try to partner with the student with the idea of "how can I do my job better?" By asking for feedback from someone that isn't interested and genuinely appreciating their response, we can often either diffuse a tense situation or perhaps open another door in the form of a referral.

Joseph,
I have wondered that as well...

Not only is it wrong...I have always windered why people waste their time calling people who do not want to hear from them?!?

I totally agree with you.
when a lead becomes non workable. we should close it and move on. it is time to work with fresh and new prospects, we must focus energies on people who are really interested . our work is to contact and help persons committed
in studying, we communicate them
the options they have in the institution we work in and help them in the warmest way to fulfill their dreams
.

Timothy,
Thank you for sharing your process.

Judy,
For profit schools often are considered by outsiders as high pressure sales.

Karen,
It is then time to replace them in your efforts.

Sharon,
Excellent!

Sharon,
That is the purpose of the forum, to share ideas with each other.

John,
Yes, many are pay-as-you-go phone service. It pays to keep on trying.

Nakia,
Interesting! I wonder what the response rate is.

Kimberly,
Thank you for your addition to the forum.

I will continue to call a number that is disconnected. Sometimes the phone bill just wasn't paid on time and week later it is working.

I agree It does make the school look bad as well as desprate!!! Put the contact info in a data base and contact them maybe after 6 months. We dont want to turn inyo hard core sales people this is about education after all

Our lead management software is great at tracking the discussions a rep. has with each call to a prosective student. Those notes in the database help us to avoid continued calls to a student who is not interested. If we have any doubts - we simply review it with the Director of Admissions.

Jenny,
You really have to follow your instincts on how to proceed.

This is a case by case scenario, every day things change in people’s lives. Maybe they’re not interested one day, yet 2 months down the road they lose their job; therefore the interest may be there. It also depends upon the person calling. If you call a “cold” lead starting off the call with “how’s everything going, just following up on your current situation to see if anything has changed in your life” is much more inviting as opposed to someone trying to sell as visit instantly; that frustrates people. This is a debate that will continue to go on; for there’s no right or wrong answer; only a case by case scenario.
