Transfer of Credits

I work with graduate programs exclusively and receive transfer credit questions frequently. Because our program is a lock-step program, in general we do not accept transfer credits. How do you deal with students who were told their credits would transfer and are now upset with you because they don't.

rolando,
Your catalog should have your policy well stated. If someone within your organization has made that statement they should be corrected immediately. Misleading the student by providing incorrect information is against the law.

Patty Aronoff

I agree. Students should always be told that we cannot guarantee credits will be transferred - it's up to the receiving institution.

Our admissions director deals with students transfering credits and is always open and honest with all students

Sheila,

We need to be open and honest. There are no guarantees with the transfer of credit and the student needs to fully understand the results.

Patty Aronoff

Sounds like a serious compliance issue. No one should be promising that credits will transfer in the absence of a articulation agreement.

Todd,
Correct! No promises, no guarantees. This is where such information is misleading.

Patty Aronoff

All the students that I speak to I am sure to never make promises that I cannot keep. As a rep I do not yield any power and make sure to explain that I have to follow policies, and when it comes down to transferring credits I can only go by what the department accepts.

It is really important we tell our prospective students that transferability of credit is at the discretion of the accepting institution, and that it is the student's responsibility to confirm whether or not credits will be accepted by another institution of the student's choice.

Elery,

The transfer of credits is always a difficult conversation to have with perspective students. They often come in with their own thoughts already made and are very disappointed to find out there is a process and is not guaranteed.

Patty Aronoff

Olga,
Absolutely! It is also stated in the catalog and I would refer the students to that portion.

Patty Aronoff

There should not be any issue with this subject--just be honest as you have been throughout the admissions process

Christopher,

Honesty, integrity, and attention to detail will bring the best customer service to our students
