WHAT HAVE I LEARNED
Reflecting on my learning in verbal and written communication, here’s what I’ve gained and how I plan to bring it into my classroom:
Clarity and Precision: I’ve learned the importance of being clear and precise in both my spoken and written communication. In my classroom, I intend to apply this by using straightforward language in my instructions, feedback, and presentations. I’ll make sure that my expectations and guidelines are communicated in a way that leaves little room for ambiguity, helping students understand exactly what’s required of them.
Active Listening: I’ve realized that effective communication involves truly listening to others. In my teaching, I’ll make it a priority to listen carefully to my students’ questions, concerns, and feedback. By actively engaging with their responses and addressing their individual needs, I can foster a supportive environment that values their input.
Professional Tone: I’ve learned the importance of maintaining a professional tone, especially in written communication, where tone can easily be misinterpreted. I plan to model this for my students by crafting emails, feedback, and announcements that are articulate, respectful, and firm when needed. This will help them understand the impact of tone and how professionalism can enhance clarity and mutual respect.
Adaptability: I’ve found that adjusting my communication style to suit different audiences is crucial. In the classroom, I’ll apply this by varying my communication approach based on the needs of my students. For example, with more complex concepts, I’ll use simpler language or analogies, while with advanced students, I might dive into more technical terminology. This adaptability will help make my lessons accessible to everyone.
Feedback and Encouragement: I’ve learned that constructive feedback should be balanced with encouragement.
