The best way for me it is watching, reading, listening and practice.i is important to receive feedback often to make sure I am in the same page.

I was born during the Gen X time period. I do prefer a more hands-on approach though flexible enough to adapt to other styles. I started an IT degree years ago and really did not understand what was taught. RAM- I animatedly thought of big goat. Naturally, ROM reminded me of a alcoholic beverage. My fix to the instructor, who was a more modern thinker and prepared pro, was to introduce a nice and shinny rock at the center of my desk. The rock was my interface between the foreign language being taught and my willingness to learn. The end result- I changed my entire vocabulary.

I learn best this way as well. It is hard for me to watch and get the hang of something. I like to be able to work and learn from my mistakes. That helps the learning to stay with me.

Judie,

My learning style is much like yours. I learn easily and would prefer someone doing or walking me through doing first. I work very hard and have no problem committing myself more to work than I do anything else. I am very independent but also must be adaptable to working in an overall team environment. Sometimes, my sense of independence makes it hard to delegate as a leader.

I definitely learn best by doing. I identify most with Gen X, however, I do also identify with the quick payoff of technology that is at our fingertips. This course is the perfect example of using social technology and discussion forums that have really come into play in this day and age. That said, I think the skills that I am learning here will be most realized when I am working with people, students and peers. Applying the skills I learn as I learn them is something I value and benefit from. I think this resonates with the Gen X background, the focus on the individual and balancing work and life experiences.

Great self-awareness, Jonah! Now that you've identified your learning style and realize that it will benefit you when working with people, how will you apply that knowledge to your role?

I am a combination of Generation X and the Millennials.

I definately have a Generation X learning style. I prefer the sound bite and often find myself deleting additional words in my head while I am reading. I will admit I can miss things this way but I prefer things to be short and to the point. I prefer bullet points to long written descriptions. I have to constantly tell myself to slow down and try and take it all in.

I relate very much so with the Millennials because I am extremely relational. I take the time to get to know each individual person one on one until I am able to really feel like I know them. Developing and building rapport with students is something that I really focus on and enjoy. Creating a bond with each student builds trust and allows them to open up so that I can understand exactly what it is that the student needs from me.

I'm a millennial in regards to when i was born so it was interesting to see that my learning style fell more inbetween Generation X and Baby Boomers. I do tend to be very relational as a person but I also stray from the internet and social media as a primary mode of communication. The face to face interactions are just much more relational and you really get to know someone on a deeper level when you communicate face to face. Especially in regard to conflict resolution, emails and other modes of written communication are very easily misinterpreted. I do work at a fast pace and tend to just pay attention to the specific details and do need to focus more on slowing things down and digging deep into getting to know the other person I'm speaking with. This training definitely helped understand the different generations and how best to relate to them and how to communicate efficiently without unintentionally rubbing someone the wrong way.

I'm not sure that learning is so much generational as it is personal no matter what generation. I've seen older students learn in the same manner as younger students. I believe it is critical that insturctors identify with each students learning style and approach instruction with those styles in mind.

That's a great point, Matthew. Each learning style is very custom. Thank you for posting!
