Interesting awareness, Meghan. What are some specific elements that you will use to strengthen your email messages and reduce the emotion?

I will work on my listening skills.
I believe sometimes communication is often failed due to listening.

Julius ,
Interesting insight. You mention that you believe that listening contributes to failed communication? Is it a lack of listening that you believe leads to failed communication?

Shannon Gormley

I really enjoy all three types of communication. I think one of the most important things one can do is smile when they talk on the phone. Even though the other person cannot see you they can hear the smile in the tone of your voice. Sometimes it helps to have a mirror close by when you talk on the phone and notice your own facial expressions. If this doesn't make you laugh, not sure what will!
I am going to work on my face-to-face interactions. I have a tendency of being over confident, with face-to-face, and need to put up guard rails to make sure I stay on track and cover everything.
I find the idea of being aware of other's agendas when communicating a strong point. I have not been aware of this at times and it has caused problems. Enjoying the class.

Julius,
That happens to me also. I need to learn to slow down and listen. I'm going to try repeating back to the person what they said to make sure I've heard it correct.

Lorri,
It sounds like you enjoy the opportunity to communicate with others on all levels, which is great! It's amazing what a smile can convey in your communications. It also sounds like you try to match your student on the phone to establish rapport, which I'm sure your students appreciate. Taking the time to truly understand where your student is coming from and their agenda will also help in ensuring that you're staying on the right track and give you the opportunity to customize your communication to that student.

Shannon Gormley

Lorri,
Great awareness. Using the 3 R's consistently can be helpful to ensure you've heard your student correctly, as well as demonstrates to your student that you truly are listening. Let me know how it's going.

Shannon Gormley

I feel comfortable and confident with face to face and phone communication; however, when I send messages in writing, even though my message gets delivered; I think it sounds strong and demanding, too seriuous I would say.

Irene,
Great awareness to have. I'm curious, what do you believe gives your written communication a tone that might be perceived as "demanding or too serious" and what do you think might help to soften the tone of your written messages?

Shannon Gormley

Maybe because I am going too fast, I go straight to the point instead of giving a little explanation first and then delivering my message. I will try to slow down and read my message before sending it, this might work.

Irene,
This is excellent awareness to have moving forward with your written communications. I think we all may be guilty of sending a message without taking the time to re-read what we've written, especially when there are a number of tasks to accomplish. Here's another tip when you re-read your messages, try to put yourself in your student's shoes. How might the tone of your message come across to you then? This can be helpful to ensure you're sending the "right" message and have an appropriate tone for that student. Good luck!

Shannon Gormley

body language, Body language is very important and your bady can say things that you don't mean if not careful.

this is good because if you keep your message simple and to the point it leave very little room for misunderstanding.

Julian,

Great point and awareness. Tell me, what do you do to make sure you are projecting the right body language?

Shannon Gormley

I will work on my verbal communication because that is the only thing that we can change. I mean you can only change how you are dressed and watch your body language.

Rachel,
Thanks for sharing with us the area that you plan to work on. Ensuring you're sending the right message with your verbal communication is a great place to start. In many instances, your non-verbal communication can play a role in sending an appropriate message too. Especially when you consider what your body language may be saying or the tone of voice that you are using. What specific elements of verbal communication to plan to work on initially?

Shannon Gormley

I totally agree with you also in the same boat. I strongly believe interacting provide more information from both parties either verbal or nun-verbal.

Body language is very important. It’s providing more information about that individual and better to adapt with.

Yanithe,
Great awareness! Body language can offer a number of insights into what is actually being communicated in the message. It's important to pay attention to the non-verbal cues a person is giving you. Once you can adapt to those cues - you are also sending a message to the person that you truly "hear" what they're saying and it's important to you.

Shannon Gormley

Yanithe,
Thank you for sharing your insights! It's amazing the amount of information you are able to pick up when you are truly listening...with your eyes and ears. How has listening for the message andthe non-verbals helped you?
