Classroom Visits and Financial Aid Newsletter

We visit our students every six weeks and throw a pop quiz about their rights and responsibilities. We also remind them to check their emails from financial aid because it may be a very important general announcement, or it could be updates informing them of changes in the industry.

We also have a Financial Aid Corner in our Campus Newsletter that's circulated everytime we visit the classrooms. Recently, our FA Corner gave a detailed information about NSLDS and the advantages they have in staying on top of their Financial Aid history.

I would like to hear from other schools and maybe adopt what they're doing in their Default Prevention and Management Program.

Merilyn,

These are all great practices. Thank you for sharing. I think the pop quiz idea is great and really shows what a student has retained from the information provided.

We visit the classrooms weekly and post announcements and contact information on bulletin boards. We also have an open door policy.

Julie ,

I think it's great you are able to visit the classrooms on a weekly basis. What a great way to build relationshsips.

In the first few days of taking over the FA position at my campus, I had a student walk into my office asking me about sending a in-school deferment form to her loan servicer of a previous student loan she had aquired. The problem was that she didn't know who her loan servicer was and expected me to know who it was off the top of my head. I could have easily solved the problem for her,but instead I gave her the proper tools (NSLDS website) to solve it herself. She came back with the name of her loan servicer and a big thank you. I really like the idea of having a FA newsletter with little tidbits that will help a student be on top of their financial aid history. It would have come in handy.

Well done on making students aware of NSLDS. The importance of having that information at the student's disposal cannot be understated. It also gives them the ability to review their loan history and make sure that it is accurate.

Greg,

Making sure a student is aware of and can navigate NSLDS is so important, even more so now with all the changes in loan servicers. This also provides a visual reinforcement to the student that they have loans that need to be paid back.

I recently did a poster board and it was posted in the students quite study area. This board included information about financial aid and listed web sites students could go to for additional information about their loans.
