Exit Counseling Seminar
We offer our upcoming Grads an Exit Counseling Seminar, which takes place during their last class required to complete the program. We usually show them a video and give them a folder that contains the Exit Counseling Guide from the Department of Education, a sheet that provides important websites that they can use to track their loans, the contact information for the school's third party company that handles the default prevention, and the contact information for the Student Accounts Department. We also have the students complete a form where they have to update their contact information and provide three current references.
Maylin,
Reaching out to students while they are still actively attending class is a good strategy. It sounds like you are providing excellent information in their folder including who to contact when they need help and how/where to locate their loans. These two details are crucial, and often the most confusing for students.

It sounds likes what you do is exactly the same things that we do at our institution as well. We set aside one class at the end of their term that is a requirement to grad and this is when we complete out Exit counseling. We build an exit packet with forms showing important tools in keeping up with their loan obligations, how to budget, and contact for our default prevention team. We also ask them to update/confirm their contact info and provide us with their employer info as well as 3 references.
Ashley,
It is fantastic that you have found a way to consistently bring students to meet with FA! Updating references again at the end of the term is a great way to keep information fresh, and I suspect that asking for employer info is a convenient segue for students who are not sure what to do with their loans while they search for a job or work toward a better paying position.
