At our college I have an excellent repor with our students and graduates. I have an open door policy and they come to me for all different sorts of things from just wanting to chat to information on placement. I also teach a 12 week course called Professional Development where the students and I get to know each other and spend time on all aspects of jobs-resumes, cover letters, references, interviewing, thank yous, and everything and anything else you can think of. Our placement rate continues to thrive at 90% or above and I think it's due to the closeness of the students and I. But I am careful not to cross the administration/student line at all times.
good job Missy! I also think its a great idea to maintain a good rapport with your students - otherwise it can damage the ability for that student/ graduate to feel comfortable with wanting to even tell you that they are working in their field of study! I try to do the same thing here at my college - i even keep a facebook profile and text acct. so my students/ graduates have additional ways to communicate with me! great ways to keep those doors open so they tell you!
