Mission Statement Development

Draft a mission statement. Will you adapt the mission statement from your school or create a unique mission statement?

Since our College's mission is to "close the gap between the traditional classroom and the 21st Century workforce," I think our Alumni Association mission statement will feed off of our College's. The purpose for us having an Alumni Association is to continue to close that gap and I believe it really only happens once they graduate.

Hi Gerry,

I like your thinking. There is great benefit in pairing your college's mission statement with the mission statement for your alumni association. Although they are not the same, there's certainly a benefit in having a connection between the two.

Our school would like to create an entirely new mission statement as the mission statement for the school reflects how we want to educate health professionals to the highest standards. However, for our alumni association, we would like to focus on networking and counseling our graduates to keep abreast of the newest changes in procedures and laws. As a result, our mission statement for the alumni association should reflect the different focus and thus be unique from our original mission statement.

Hi Randy,

I like the direction you're headed. It's important to think through where you want to go and what you want to accomplish through your alumni association. Your mission statement should reflect this.

I agree that our mission statement should reflect the goals of the alumni association. Since the goals for our alumni association are markedly different from our mission statement of the school, we would need to create an original mission statement for the alumni association.

Totally in agreement with you on that, Randy.

Our mission statement is about educating professionals to the highest standards of the industry. I would just slightly change it to "connecting" instead of educating and then add in graduates instead of professionals.

Hi Amanda,

I encourage you to really think through the goals you have for your alumni association or community and write your mission statement to match those goals. Is your goal purely to offer a place for grads to connect with each other? Then your mission statement is accurate.

I really see our alumni association as a way to connect all of our students across the United States in assisting each other in educating and networking with each other. Since most of our graduates are self-employed, this would be the focus instead of finding jobs for each other.

Amanda,

It sounds to me like you have a unique direction you want to go with your alumni association. As you write your mission statement, it should reflect that direction.

Since the school mission statement is "Where student success comes first," I think that the Alumni Association mission statement should reflect the school mission statement. Maybe something like, "Where students success continues after graduation." Something along those lines.

Casey,

I like the idea of connecting the two mission statements. Just remember that the mission should be a statement of your purpose.

Our Alumni Association will draft its own Mission Statement. Because the school's primary objective is the education of students, our Mission Statements should be somewhat different.

"Our Alumni Association will facilitate the professional growth of our graduates through networking, continued education, and employment opportunities"

I think that this sums everything up relatively well within one sentence.

Jeff,

It appears that you have a pretty clear idea of the direction you want to head and the goals you want to accomplish via your Alumni Association and your mission statement clearly communicates that.

Good job!

I will adapt the mission statement from our school as it is one that I feel encompasses our passion for the students and the employers.

Sharon,

It's good to tie into your institution's mission statement. How might you 'tweak' it to fit your alumni program?

I would draft a new mission statement for the Alumni Association since it will have members that are not part of our educational sturcture. Looking at the aspect of having the community involvement as well as past students.

I would create a new mission statement for the alumni associate since it will include members from the comunity and past students to bring them together which will help to co-market the two and still educate them on new ideas, laws, techniques used in the beauty and wellness profession.
