Time Management without Director of Alumni Association

For schools that do not plan to hire a director, how can a school effectively run a successful alumni assocation with the current faculty/staff in place?

Samantha,
I would think your advisory team would need to divide up responsibilities and task. My institution started by hiring me (their first director) just 10 hours a week. As the job grows and our administration sees the benefits, my hours have grown and I'm now up to 30 hours per week.

The Placement Dept. seeks many benefits from effectively being in charge of an alumni association. The Placement Dept. can be the leader and the facilitator to start the program. Once, it gets up and running then the school can look at other alternatives.

Kelley,
Certainly, I agree that the placement department stands to benefit from connections with your graduates. Marketing and admissions has much to gain from sharing those alumni success stories, especially if they are done well, and there are probably many other departments that just may need a little help exploring the benefits of alumni connectedness.
Good luck!

Just like the task of creating a Alumni association is broken up into smaller steps to get to the end result. You would need to have faculty and staff take on small roles to have a grand end result.

Coryne,

Yes, you need everyone to jump on board and be willing to take bite sized pieces. Great ideas!
Good luck!

I agree - I think a division of tasks/responsibilities can make it a lot easier for schools without the budget to hire a Director still be able to start a successful Alumni Association. In regards to one of the other statements, I do think the Placement or Career Services dept has a lot to gain from the use of an Almuni Association (which was my reason for taking this course) but do feel that Student Services and Financial Aid would also be good candidates for volunteering/assisting as these are the departments that most often continue to work with the students after they complete the course.

Jennifer,
Agreed. It would be beneficial to have representatives from several departments on your team.
