Keeping students involved
I like the ideas of having current students get involved with new students. They can be mentors and show them teh ropes. Also they can let students know what kind of obstacles they have overcame to get where they are now.
I agree. Having someone that can show a student how to achieve success in college is very important. It may be possible to develop a mentorship program at the college.
When possible I have a former student visit the classroom and share what they learned from the class and how they have incorporated the knowledge into their life. This sets up a positive platform for the class to move forward.
It is so important to have former students to come and talk to the new students. This helps the new students to buy into the school.
That is so true. A new student will feel like they can relate to a past student and will feel more like a part of the class.
I love the idea of having current students help the new student. Here at MMC on the Fayetteville campus, we love to incorporate our Student Ambassadors and also various Club Presidents.
I agree having current students that are ready to graduate or almost ready is a good idea to be mentors. They know the ends and outs of how things work and can answer the questions that a lot of new students have. They can also explan things better in some cases (peer to peer).
Having a student speaker that is currently enrolled or recently graduated is a great idea in helping new student s project themselves in the mentors shoes.
I think it is very important to be able to intergrate new students with current students. this will make the new students feel like they are a part of the school and belong there. People want to feel like they are accepted and belong.
Montrez,
I believe that 'mixing it up' with current students helps to accelerate the acclimation to school.
