First Day of Class Homework Assignment

So many of our courses require a textbook. Students often wait until Week 2 or 3 to get ahold of the textbook and this sets the course way back! One solution I have found is to email the students BEFORE the course meets for the first time to set an expectation about timely textbook acquisition.

generally I don't assign homework unless we are not behind schedule which is rearly.

Thomas,

This is an excellent observation and so true! I am not sure why students wait so long to acquire books. Sometimes it is financial. Other times I believe they think they won't need it.

Working in a vocational setting where the students are coming from working all day etc , i try not to give home work , but then i notice that they wont pick up the books at all , some feel that all they need to succeed is the information that is taught in class

Russell,

I agree...and have personally fallen in to this trap. The most effective courses for me personally where the ones that assumed I had read the chapter and the material covered in class was supplemental to that. It required me to be self-directed in 'owning' that portion of my education.
