First Week

The first week is crucial in the classroom, it sets the tone for the rest of their schooling. If the students are bored and feel that they have not learned anything within the first week, there goes retention.

At our college both the first and second week are important. During the first week, Student Support passes out coffee, juices, donuts and snacks as both new students and continuing students arrive to class. During the second week, Student Support sponsors a Welcome Back party to engage the students and bring them together after the break.

I am a new instructor and am interested in the activites you utilize that first week?

i absolutely agree, my first week is usually a motivational week with very easy 100% quizzes to build their confidence and prepare them for the journey.

Also missing time away from class during the firtst week is critical to their success.

Deb,

This is a wonderful idea! I really love the instant, personalized touch that helps to bring the two together.

Susan Backofen

Our classes are small as well. We have a 'buddy' system where students from the class before draw a picture, or print something unique to them, for the front of the new student orientation binder. This student then becomes the new student's buddy. It has been effective and helps dispel some new student fears.

Our classes are so small, it is really easy for the students and instructors to get to know each other. Also for the students to get to know each. The students will be together for their entire program of study until they do their externship. That first week will truly establish that bond.

I agree that the first week is critical. The instructor needs to set the tone. Greeting the students as they enter the classroom demonstrates that they have an instructor who is interested in them. When an instructor is late and not there to greet the students it sends the message to the student that they are not important. Students need clear expectations on the first day. If they do not know what is expected they will feel unsure of taking the class. The first week is critical to the learning process and the first week is critical to retention as well.

Many things can go right or wrong for students in the first week. We as teachers/administrators need to be aware of each new student, and how they are doing. Some students may really love the program, but if they don't make a friend the first week- may drop. Every student is different, and I feel we need to visit one on one, and make that connection with each new student ESPECIALLY in the first week.

Patricia,

You are absolutely correct...the first week is critical. If students are feeling lost or overwhelmed during the first week, it is much harder to retain them.

Susan Backofen

I believe that the first week is crucial because if they already feel lost or apprehensive the first week will only confirm the fact that they should drop out and that school is not for them. I have special activites for them to get to know one another and also discuss why they are in school and how they will see themselves at graduation getting the degree they want.
