I think that admissions does a wonderful job at directing students towards the right career training program. I think that a stricter admission assessment is needed in certain programs to ensure that the students that are accepted will be successful
Yes I feel like the admissions process can be improved to increase student retention. First, I would like to say that our admissions team is fantastic, but like anything, there is room for improvement. I feel like if a prospect students background is looked at a little more we can have better retention. Some students are pregnant or having domestic problems and we are unaware until they are in the program and they drop due to these issues.
Dayton,
Making students aware of how past actions or behaviors may be an obstacle to future success is where the screening helps.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Vivian,
There should be a student handbook or student website that contains all this information. If not, there needs to be one and it should be introduced to the student at orientation.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Elizabeth,
How is the testing weak and what has changed in the grading policy? While executives at the school are the final decision makers there should be avenues for discussion about major changes such as these. That is where effective change should start.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Dawn,
Sounds like you know what you need to learn and that the school has programs and services in place to help students succeed.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Marisela,
Or the assessment could identify what services might help those students in need to succeed.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Shanika,
They may be coming into the program to have better means to deal with their issues. Problems and issues are obstacles but do not mean that the student is not capable of success.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
I can see where evaluations can help the student as well as the course facilitator understand the students perception of the program and the field of study that they are entering. The evaluations can clarify any obstacles that the student and the instructor may foresee. It is important that the students have a realistic understanding of what is involved in the program before entering it. And the student should understand what resources are available to help them achieve their goals.
The score for the admission test is lower than surrounding private colleges and we have eliminated one of the two tests. The passing grade for nursing has been reduced to 75% from 80%, despite a mediocre passing rate for nursing boards amongst the cohorts that had to score the 80%
The admissions process is very important for the student. It must include what is expected of them to succeed in the class. Problems that might exist for the student (problems outside of the school) must be addressed so they do not hinder their success in the program. If the school could assist in these problems it would benefit the student, for example help with them finding childcare or maybe carpooling.
Admissions can improve if they have a checklist of the important information when selling a program. Many admissions rep can speak to the Program Director about that particular program the in and out of it. They themselves can do research on the programs in their school and make sure their facts are correct. This way from day one they are giving the correct information, in the end the students will always go back to them seeking advice because they were always honest.
John,
Absolutely. I could not say it better. Thank you.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Elizabeth,
If the students are passing the NCLEX at the other end of the program at the required rate then this should not be an issue. What does they data show?
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Mary,
Many schools have such programs or services for students.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Tracy-Ann ,
Programs Directors should be providing product knowledge to the Admissions team on a regular schedule.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Our admission process appears to correlate with similar ideas discuss in the module, in my observation maybe the reps could do a little more with the customer/student. Such as allowing them to sit in on a class or lecture (real-time) experiences allowing them the opportunity to fully grasp the concepts or requirements of the course. I believe this will help them to figure out if this is really what he/she really wants to do in the future.
It's great to see admissions knows its tools to check off all the methods tried to prevent attrition of students. It is a teamwork by the staff and faculty to maintain and increase retention in schools
Traci,
You might wish to select courses and instructors from early in the program.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Florita,
While almost all career schools have open admissions the students should have a clear understanding of the challenge to be undertaken.
