Michael,
Thank you for this post. I like believe each class meeting gives us a chance to make a new "first impression" for that day. The opening few minutes of each class meeting should be well planned in order to set the atmosphere for learning.

by receiving them outside the door, holding the door open and saying hello to each and everyone of them individually. I find that by allowing them to enter the class room first akes them feel important and respected. it shows that everybody, including myself, are walking into that class room as a group. WE share the space, they are not in my domain.
To make a first good impression, smile, be natural, make eye contact, have a nice phrase to welcome, show excitment of meeting them...
Patrick,
It is important to male a "good first impression" at the start of every class meeting. What are some things you do to accomplish this in your classes?

Remembering their names as fast as possible, that simple action shows you care about them.
Hello,
I believe a first impression counts and it is important to treat people they way you want to be treated. Always be polite, smile, greet, assist etc.
A quote “ people may forget what you say and do but they will never forget how you made them feel”
I believe sincerity is very important when forming the first impression. Through the years I have always pushed myself to be a better person. The first smile, greeting, the quick remembering of the students names are important. To follow I feel the sincere desire to assist in any way possible to help a student goes a long way.
We can provide the best customer service and show them that we care about them and their future.
I always ask them how they are doing and why are they here. I getto know them so I have a better understanding of where they are coming from
I always great them and smile. We set clear boundaries and practices on the first day so that they are comfortable and know what is expected.
I would say by smiling and introducing who you are.
Next, I would show the student that you have an interest in who they are. Ask what their name is, what they are studying, and what some of their goals are.
I agree and smile can definitely go a long way...Especially as a staff member in a school. I've worked in schools for about 10 years and I feel that as representatives we should always have a smile on at work no matter what personal problems we may be having.
By establishing a positive enviroment from the first day of class and building on that foundation as class goes on.
It is good to have a first impression on the students first, that can give me a "head start" and I am able to read the class, learn their intentions, manners, and their level of motivation. Before the first official meeting I can make sure I fulfill their expectations from the start.
I truly believe if you are the first to smile and look that person in the eye it will make them more comfortable with you right off the bat. People can sense the warmth of a smile and if it heart felt or not. You must also look and act professional. People need to feel that you are approachable. With this said, I do like getting the first students who enroll into our school. I make them feel welcomed right away and also every day they come to our school. I try and greet them first and always thank them. I shake their hand when they leave and thank them again. I explain that they will be the future leaders of this industry and that a true leader is one who will still do the right thing when no is looking or better yet, when no one is around. I encourage them to shoot for the stars because if they miss, they can grab the moon on the way down. I feel with this type of attitude and method of portraying myself to the student, right from the start, they in turn will try to mimic my attitude to help them in their future.
The senior class always tell the new students that I am mean just to frighten them. I am strict & run an organized classroom. After the students actualy meet me, see my sense of humor & passion & knowledge & see who I really am, they look forward to coming to class. Every day is an adventure & they never know what to expect.
Brenda,
Thanks for illustrating a teacher can have high standards without being mean. Some folks think than "nice" and "demanding" are mutually exclusive.

Philippe,
We get a new chance to make a "first impression" each time we start class. What do you do to make the first few minutes of class memorable?
Jeffrey Schillinger
By setting the standard for my classroom. I like to lead be example.
