I was relieved to know that the methods I am using are being reinforced in this course. ED104 was helpful in validating and affirming what I am trying to convey in the classroom. I try to take some time in each class to listen to the students' updates on personal issues but then we get to the course material and stick to it for the remainder of the session. Breaks are often the best time to meet with them privately as they often have to leave quickly by the end of class to resume the other roles they hold, such as parents, caregivers, etc.
