Personlizing Your Lessons
Many career college provide a standardized curriculum to their instructors. If you are teaching in one of those colleges you need to personalize the curricuulum so it will reflect your personality and experiences. When you receive the curriculum look at how the topics are broken down. Then go through each topic and think of an example of a work experience that you have had that would apply to the content. Make a note in the margin of the currculum so you will be sure and remember to share the example or story when that topic is covered. The more experience you have with the curriculum the more you will see the opportunities to share your experiences with your students.
If you dont 'personalize the curriculum then you are only a tool that is used to convey content. This not the purpose of being an instructor. An instructor is a model, motivator and facilitator of instruction. Learning is a personal experience for the students so by sharing your examples and experiences you are helping to make it personal for the students. This is one of the major goals of teaching. Have fun with looking for ways to personalize the curriculum while stamping your personality on the communication phase of teaching. It will be a win win for everyone.
As an automotive instructor, I always personalize the presentations that I am provided. I review the information, make corrections that I think are warranted, add a little extra, remove anything redundant, then use all of that information as a review tool for my presentation. I present the information using a conversational style and not just reading from the board. I like to infuse some of my personality into the mix. I also invite, almost beg for, questions.
