Get Your Students Hired
Although I have been teaching for a little over a year, this particular course gave me some new insights. I found it remarkable, all types of student behavioral characterisitics were addressed and as I was reading the material - the thought of "yes I have had this type of student" came to mind quite frequently. The advice on how to handle different students is very helpful and I am grateful for it.
My students tend to come up with excuses on why they could not attend class and failure rates are mostly related to attendance and subsequently missing exams. I do use a calendar in our computerized system which is viewable by the students. This does help as they are more aware of what isexpected. I think even though the students are adults, structure is welcome even with some grumbling.
Managing a classroom of students with ages ranging from 18 to 40 coming from rural and inner city environments can be very challenging. Tests my soft skills daily.
I found the material very useful. I definitely can do a better job with utilizing the "I" strategy when dealing with disruptive students. As a Program Director, I usually am quite forward when dealing with classroom management.
I am enjoying this course so far and I have written down some very useful tips. I was surprised ,yet shocked to see the area that discussed frustration that teachers experience when students seem like they are uninterested or they act like clowns/attention-seekers. I can't wait to see what else is in store in the course.
