Challenges of incorporating SEL include limited time, need for resources, student engagement, parental support, and difficulty measuring progress.

  1. Every week students participate in SEL assignments that are graded
  2. Students are encouraged to utilize the QR codes for counselors and social workers
  3. Empathizing in classroom settings and as an expectation allows students to understand emotional growth.

Social and emotional learning is about building the skills to understand our feelings and connecting with others in order to make smart choices that will help us grow.

I would say the main challenge I face at this grade (9th) is the range of maturities. Many are just learning to cope with new feelings, and they use humor, insults, or stoicism as an armor against them. The next is finding a well-timed moment to incorporate it into the curriculm. This is less a challenge than an opportunity for creativity, inviting students to dive even deeper into the humans creating the literature we read.

Our school encourages student-driven activities and engagement where students get to share their thoughts and feelings about the school. We also have clubs and groups designed to address student mental health and stress levels. The school also has weekly opportunities for the teachers to meet, discuss, and collaborate with each other responding to the school, students, the district, etc.

SEL is Social-emotional learning, a set of soft skills that helps an individual navigate their relationships with people around them and within society.

There are two major challenges. The first is the maturity of the students to understand the importance of SEL and the second is the school setting. SEL usually comes behind academics, school events, etc., so it is the problem of prioritization in an already packed schedule.

Building student-faculty relationships

Teaching students to advocate for themselves

Students showing each other empathy and understanding

SEL stands for social-emotional learning. To me is the ability to interact with others and learn from life's ups and downs. The ability to show empathy and understand your own and others emotions.

Students not being mature enough to understand the importance of the SEL lessons. The world revolves around them and their phone.
