There is a difference between a service animal and an emotional support animal.
The use of universal design can accommadate many students both those with hanicaps and those without to have easier access to courses. Use of captioning on videos can also provide for those with hearing impairments, but also students who learn better from listening then watching.
Not all students have obvious disabilities and some people such as Vetrans may chose to hide their disability. Not everyone w/the same disability will have the same needs. Each student needs to be looked at as an individual
The student must take responsibility for requesting accomadations if needed. An emotional support animal is NOT a service animal. Despite appropriate accomadations if the student breaks a rule such as cheating on a test the student is subject to the same disipline as any other student.
I learned that there are different types of students related to online learning just as there are in classroom learning. It's important to identify students who may procrastinate and offer time management suggestions. It's important to be aware of a students other "roles" and how this may affect their ability to follow through with an online course.
The difference between synchronous and asynchronous discussions is important as synchronous discussions work best with small groups of students or individual students. It's also important to provide feed back at the end of a discussion
Teacher and student biographies are important so that all those enrolled in the online course can get to know each other.
Students have a higher sense of confidence when they know that there is an instructor to answer questions and IT support if there are computer issues.
The syllabus needs to be very detailed and is a contract between student and instructor. get to class before students, learn thier names and keep a check list of what needs to be covered during class.
Be enthusiastic, model, teach by example, show your love of the profession and the topic you are teaching. Use your peers for ideas and different teaching strategies. Always remember there is more to learn as an instructor. Motivate your students
