There are a lot of challenges to consider when it comes to FERPA.  FERPA includes student housing, software providers, and vendors if student information is included. There are other laws that need to be considered which affect decisions about FERPA law like HIPPA law, The Soloman Amendment, The USA Patriot Act, The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, and The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Online education students are protected under FERPA and students may not be anonymous while completing online work.  Staff and students must be careful when posting information online. Youtube is a public website that should never be utilized… >>>

A student has a right to dispute a grade or record even if the information is not changed in which a note of dispute would be included.  Alumni records are not protected under FERPA? Student records cannot be destroyed if they are the process of an inspection or review.  I found that if a student has not paid their fees that they can be denied a copy of transcripts but may view them only.  Sadly, due to tragic events in the past laws like FERPA were created to protect students from violence, stalking or other risk factors to the student. … >>>

I have learned what is considered Directory information like student's name, address, phone number, etc... What is not Directory information such as race, gender, social security number, etc....  Personally identifiable information may include Directory and Non-Directory information.  Parents of students may obtain copies of records if the student is a dependent, under 21 years of age, in a health related or emergency situation or with student consent.

FERPA is a student's protection rights of their information whether it is grades, personal information or records related to that student.  Students can request copies of their information, but the company has 45 days to comply and may impose a fine for copies.  It is our job to protect the students' records.

Delivering course content is important to keep students' interest and enhances their ability to learn the content.  Trying a variety of methods is appropriate.  People can only maintain interest in a subject for a short period of time around 15 to 18 minutes.  The most important information needs to be addressed first.

Introducing myself at the beginning of the class is an important "break the ice" moment with the students and helps teacher and student to get to know one another.

Planning and preparation are important because it shows professionalism.  The syllabus outlines the course, the objectives and helps the students understand their expectations and outcomes in a clear way.  Textbooks are reference guides for the students as they learn.

I learned that I am a Model, Manager and Motivator for my students.  How I dress, the way I speak, how I conduct myself, and how I use my time, acting as a leader, and having confidence in the classroom reflects on me as a teacher.  I play many roles.  Professionalism is extremely important.

Self-directed learning is very important for students learning.  Most adult learners are very self-motivated and just need additional guidance for learning a specific skill.  I always say that I am a "tool for learning, a source of reference, a guide".

Prescriptive advising is factual answers, concrete answers.  Developmental advising is different than prescriptive advising because it involves a more theoretical stance following cognitive development theory, psychosocial theory, and person-environmental interaction theory.  Both the student and the advisor take responsibility for the advising but allows the student to take responsibility for his or her decision.  Advising steps may include exploration of life goals, and vocational goals, program choice, course choice and scheduling classes.  I will focus my attention on the student showing a caring attitude, be an open listener, and advise the student as necessary.
