Bob, Good point. I struggle with this myself at times. I think one of the challenges of administrative roles is that at times you do not have the time to dig deep into any one project or initiative. Many of us are wired for perfection! Hope you are enjoying the course! All the best, Dr. Blake Faulkner
Robert , Excellent points. I particularly like the guide for critical thinking that you use. Well done. Dr. Blake Faulkner

Robert , Your points are important and very relevant as the pace of change continues to accelerate and has made both strategic planning and strategic thinking much more dynamic. Procuring information that is both relevant and reliable is important and the "intuition" you refer to is also important. I believe that it is increasingly important to step back from day to day activities on a frequent basis to assess strategically where the organization is going and where energies are being focused. We are seeing transformative change in higher education and taking time to step back and assess how our thinking… >>>

Angelica, You bring up a very insightful point. The accreditation process brings significant value to our organizations as it focuses a great deal on ensuring we have the appropriate systems and processes in place to fullfill or mission, as well as to continually improve. I have found that completing a self-study and preparing for a site visit helps organizations look at themselves objectively across all areas, as well as integration across functional areas, that is healthy and tends to spur further improvement. James, Good points. I have recently spent several days in strategic planning sessions in different regions of the U.S. and Canada. One additional point that I would add to your comments is that strategic thinking requires you to step back from the narrow operational focus that is required and an essential part of our daily work and success. Strategic thinking requires you to look more broadly at trends, relationships, connections between ideas, etc... . As technology increases both the productivity and pace of our daily lives I believe it is increasingly important that we step away periodically, quiet the mind,… >>>

Christiana, Agreed. Although I recently had an opportunity to spend some time with Dr. Gary Latham at the University of Toronto. Dr.Latham is one of the leading researchers in organizational psychology and he reiterated that what people truly strive for is to have a "voice" in the organization. That said his research showed that folks could live with the decision made as long as they know their voice was heard and their inputs were considered. Although people don't always agree with a decision, and may be disappointed, as long as you truly listen to their ideas and suggestions they will… >>>

Charles, Good point! Looking at broader context is essential. Research is supporting the fact that the creative and strategic thinking processes are enhanced when people have time to quiet the mind, reflect and put themselves in the state of mind that provides perspective beyond the immediate. Larry, I like your thinking. I think making sure that there are owners of action items is also important. The other component that is becoming increasingly important is making sure that the strategic plan is dynamic and updated on a regular basis. Higher education, like many other industries, is changing rapidly and I am finding that regular review of the plan and its goals, objectives is becoming increasingly important. How often do you think the strategic plan should be reviewed and updated? Dr. Blake Faulkner
