My actions and the way I chose to facilitate coursework can make a big difference ina n individual students success or failure

What are some strategies you guys find useful to motivate students to fully participate in the class from the beginning of a semester. Often times I feel like I lose a student before the interesting part of the course work even begins. Especially if the course is slow in developing.

I believe I can do a better job with grabbing my students attention with things they are finding " boring". This can be difficult ,especially at the high school level. I heard some tips and strategies on how to do that.
