What are some ways/methods used to give constructive negative feedback?

seeing the campus through the eyes of the student

This brings up a good point. I believe that you can develop a bettter relationship with the students if you know where they are coming from. I was a student of the campus where I'm teaching right now. I find this to work to my advantage, because I can relate to my students and they find me approachable.

adult students/late assignments

One of the challenges of teaching adult students is that they do have a life outside the classroom (i.e. kids, spouses, job, etc.). How do you deal with excuses such as sick child, work, deatn in the family, etc. as a reason late assignment without being inconsiderent? How do you discern if they are telling the truth, especially if you have the same students with these excuses?
