  1. The first week is very important

How do I intend to apply it?

  1. Focus on making the student comfortable during the first week by following up with them and helping them feel comfortable in school/class/new environment
  2. Provide extra time to late orientation students because they may feel behind from the start.

  1. Faculty needs to attend orientation and share a bio sheet
  2. Students need to be informed about employment outlook and types of jobs/title available.

  1. Ask faculty and staff to attend orientation or provide a bio sheet.

  1. Students offer suffer from Buyer’s Remorse when enrolling/starting college
  2. Schools can help overcome that by reassuring the students others have succeeded and they can too.
  3. School support  is very important
  4. Orientation needs to address student concerns

  1. Ask current students for information they wished they had in orientation.
  2. Have more activities during orientation

  1. Timing is very important for students.  Quick action is always best practices.
  2. Retention is best when faculty and staff know how to handle student situations/concerns.
  3. At risk students need more attention

  1. Try to identify the at risk students before it is obvious, Engage with student to see their comfort level.
  2. Have resources available for at risk students.

 

Have resources availalbe for students dealing with stress.

  1. Several factors contribute to retention, come we can control and others we cannot.
  2. Stress is a big factor in students deciding to drop.

How do I intend to apply it?

  1. Try to eliminate school as a stressor by offering assistance and reinforcing the end result.
  2. Work with students to keep a positive attitude about school. 

The students need to know that you really care them and their success.

  1. Students enroll for a variety of reasons.
  2. Students often don’t know what to ask or even expect when enrolling.
  3. Students have high expectations

 

How do I intend to apply it?

  1. Let Students   know what resources are available to them and how to access them. Handouts, flyers, emails etc. could be used.
  2. Student resources need to be up to date. Perform regular checks, get feedback from employers as to latest trends and hiring needs.

What have I learned from this module?

Retention is very important for many reasons.

  1. It demonstrations students’ desire to improve by gaining an education and hands on experience.
  2. It helps the employers with supply chain and industry growth.
  3. It is necessary for budgetary reasons.

Retention needs to analyzed

  1. Retention needs to be looked at closely to determine what patterns exist
  2.  Faculty and Staff need to take a proactive approach to retention
  3. Students are important and not just a number, carefully review each situation that caused a student to drop
