Encouraging critical thinking is the most important aspect of active learning. Performing activities that promote and encourage critical thinking is important in active learning environments.

Group activities, which were a rarity in normal lectures and classes, should be much more numerous in active learning environments in order to help increase student engagement.

Ensuring that students have access to reliable technology is key to completing these active learning courses, and instructors should make sure to have a plan B in case the technology is unavailable for whatever reason. 

Self-directed learning is a new process where students make a greater effort to engage themselves with the course materials and can help students learn and retain information in a whole new way.

Varying teaching styles during the course is key to maximizing student engagement.

Sharing something about yourself helps break down the barrier between yourself and the students which facilitates a better learning enviornment.

Being prepared before class starts is key to making sure the classroom functions and learns as it is supposed to.

Leading by example is a key aspect in helping students learn.
