About me

I am Theater Graduate from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio and also from the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.

My main focus of learning was in Costume Design which I have been working professionally for over 25 years.

I love the Entertainment Industry which is why I have worked for Walt Disney Worlds Creative Costuming Dept. for 14 years.

One of my hobbies is the collection and curation of historical costumes.

I have been teaching Costume Design and Pattern Drafting classes at the Int'l Academy of Design Technology since Fall 2012 and I have enjoyed the opportunity to share my experiences and knowledge with eager students.

Dependent Learners

I have found that 90% of my students that are NOT online learners fall into the "Dependent Learner" category.

They wait for step-by-step instructions and do not take initiative or feel confident to risk being wrong in their choices.

As for Online Learners that use the "Chat Room", they seem to be more eager and confident to ask questions and learn from the instructor.

Any other thoughts on this topic?

Do You Share Examples with Your Students?

I whole heartedly agree! I LOVE sharing my real life experiences in entertainment and costuming. Even though my students are more fashion oriented, they appreciate the diversity of the topics I bring to the classroom. In some cases, it event sparks their interest in broadening career choices. Engaging wall-flower students

There are usually students that always answer questions or participate. I let them answer at the beginning of class but the switch gears and say," What's you opinion of that (name)?" or "How would you solve this problem". To generally get the classroom warmed up,(fashion design/merchandising) I ask a general question on the topic I am lecturing on and have everyone tell me their favorite designer or new clothing line they like. This makes the students opinion seem inclusive and valuable to the class and teacher.

Humor in teaching

@scmeaux :

I personally like to call my style of teaching "animated" in order to keep the students engage students while learning! An example would be my interpretation of seeing a beautiful piece of artwork and singing, "Ahhhh!" in an angelic tone! Also, working at Walt Disney World helps alot when you have pixie dust working for you!
