Primairly when a student starts late I try and set up a time to go over all what was missed and encourge them to use tutoring to get caught up and have all scheduled missed assignments ready for them with a 3-4 day deadline to turn in their work. I realize it may be a bit breathtaking for them but to minimize them from becoming discouraged and desiring to quit I give them a bit of breathing room while walking them through.
Many times I find it hard to engage a student when their desire is with another career focus and this was option 2 and not the primary focus. Therefore, retention has seemed to be a problem no matter how hard you try to keep them.

As I was reading the lesson, I found an interesting article on the NY Times News Blog. Stated :
"Schools or colleges have two purposes as far as students are concerned. The first is to educate. The second is to place students in challenging and well-compensated positions after they graduate so they can use their educations to build careers and lives. Along with the quality of the faculty is the effectiveness of the job-placement office. The university is society’s gatekeeper. Students see degrees as tickets of admission to the big show."
Student that start late have to be treated very gentle. I have learned that when they start late it increases their chance of dropping since they feel left behind. It is important for all staff to assist the student in this matter to ensure the students overall success.

One of the major reasons I have heard students state why they dont enroll is thier ability to keep up since many have been out of school for a long time. While that may be true, its up to the admissions team to assure them that there are many which are in their same position ,and while the orientation process is being administered, give these individuals an opportunity to link up with others alike , which can decrease the fear thresh hold.

I feel very empowered to mentor students. It gives me a since of accomplishment and overall joy when the "light bulb" comes on in the student. They tend to appreciate things a bit more.
