About me
Instructor of HVAC/R in TN, I have worked as a Stationary Engineer for over 25 years. I have been the cheif engineer in many of San Francisco high-rise office buldings and worked my way up to the level of property manger of a high-rise building. This is my second term as a teacher of HVAC/R and I enjoy it most now because I have a lot more experience under my belt in my field than I did when I first taught!

I truly enjoy learning, every day I learn something new from
students, my peer’s, from online sources, it does not matter where I get the
information, as long as I am continuing to increase my knowledge base which
will aid me in my quest to be a better instructor and mentor to those I am
charged with educating in their chosen field. These online courses have given
great ideas that I can incorporate into my class room to aid me in effectively teaching
the adult learner!
I truly believe that retention is the entire faculties’ job, from the Admissions Rep to the Librarian, the instructor to the book store clerk, we all have a duty to make the students experience at school, an experience that will make them feel welcome and important to both their success and the schools success. In order for that to happen, there must be a set of ‘standards” that each staff member must follow after indoctrination and adequate training in those standards. Before I begin a lecture/discussion, I begin a general discussion that incorporates the subject that I am about to begin, the students do not realize that I am gauging what they know about the subject before hand. I let them explain how they think that a certain process is done letting all the students add ideas as to how this process is done. I ask critical questions as the discussion progresses to make sure that they are incorporating all essential elements that must be considered. When we get new students (1st time enrollee’s) should we be setting aside some time at the beginning of the semester to set and talk with each student to try to get a heads-up on any issue(s) that might cause an “unnecessary†drop? As an instructor I try to get to each student and try to find out little things about them and their situations without coming off as being nosy! This helps in averting issues before they get out of hand for the student if I can offer alternatives or help them fing the right solution for their issue.… >>>
When subject-matter is highly technical or requires that I have to deal with formulas, rules and the like, before starting into the subject matter, I try to find a common ground from everyday life that all can relate to and start an informal discussion with the class asking them what order do they follow when putting that engine back together, or how they reach that “higher†level of the game that they play, to try to show them that if they apply that same frame of thought or strategy towards what we are about to study, it can be challenging,… >>>
I really enjoyed the modules I completed. I picked up some useful information and found out that I was doing a few things right with regards to my approach to educating adult learners!

I too, enjoyed ED107, I am sure that I will apply some of the methods talked about and learned that I have been useing some of the methods without knowing that there were terms to describe what I was doing!
