Bennett I agree it was a very good refresher course and a good one for me to take to reinvigorate my enthusiasm for teaching and avoid falling into a rut.
Dale I agree completely when the students feel a connection to you and believe you want them to be successful they are a lot more motivated. I also think it is important to have a bit of fun learning in a class and you are so right when a student "gets it" it is magical.

I send out weekly 'friendly reminders' to them listing their outstanting assignments with an offer to help them with them.
